Mythology and the modern world collide in this epic quest for justice by Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), your basic below-average, misfit student whose family life is a mess and who’s misunderstood by everyone except his best friend, Grover (Brandon T. Jackson). A voice warns that everything is about to change as Percy enters the New Roman and Greek Art Gallery on a school field trip, and, indeed, it does. Percy’s substitute teacher morphs into a mythical beast and tries to attack him, and it’s revealed that Percy is the son of Poseidon, and a true demigod. Percy also discovers that Grover is really a satyr–half-human, half-goat–and his sworn protector, and that one of his teachers is a centaur–half-horse, half-man–who’s more committed to Percy’s education than he could ever have imagined. On top of it all, Percy is the prime suspect in the recent theft of Zeus’s lightning bolt and is being hunted by the gods. Following these shocking revelations, Percy is taken to a special training camp to learn to control and use his exceptional powers, and in the process, his mother is imprisoned by Hades. Against all advice, Percy, his protector Grover, and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), daughter of Athena, leave camp to rescue Percy’s mother from the underworld. Their quest is extremely dangerous and puts them squarely in the path of Medusa (Uma Thurman), with her venomous hair and gaze that turns people to stone. The three also battle a five-headed, fire-breathing beast and visit a Las Vegas casino patrons never leave, and finally they find themselves deep in the underworld, at the mercy of the unpredictable Persephone, wife of Hades. Somehow, Percy must both convince the gods he did not steal Zeus’s lightning and prevent a war of the gods that could potentially destroy the entire world. Based on the books by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is an exciting action film rich with ancient mythology, yet set squarely in the 21st century. Enriched by strong special effects and some potently disturbing images, it is a powerful story about family, trust, determination, and love. (Ages 11 and older) –Tami Horiuchi

“Good Movie, Bad Book Adaptation” 2010-10-26
By Angelica Harmon (Portland, ME)
Having never read the book that this movie was based on, I went into it not knowing what to expect. I found it thoroughly enjoyable! The acting was quite good, the story pacing was dead on, and it had both action and comedy. I watched it three times and then decided it was time I read the books.

I just finished the second book in the series about ten minutes ago, and now I understand why so many fans of the books are upset at the movie adaptation of their beloved story. Aside from the VERY basics (i.e. who Percy is, who the Gods are, the lightning bolt being stolen, and the quest) the movie doesn’t stay true to the book at all. While everyone knows book adaptations are not going to be 100% accurate, I think most fans hope for at least 80-90%. This movie is closer to 50%, if that.

Percy’s best friend is characterized completely differently in the movie than in the book. Rather than an awkward teenager who is unsure of himself we’re given a smooth-talking lady’s man. The character who turns out to be the major villan of the book is completely left out of the movie – which then makes someone else the villan for the movie’s purposes. The screenplay writer left out major plots, I’m assuming because he felt it wouldn’t make for a good movie. My issue with this is that if the story wouldn’t make a good movie, why did Disney go forward with it, other than to make a buck?

In the end, though, I still enjoy the movie. Just be aware that if you’re looking for it to be true to the books, it’s not and you’ll likely come away hating it. If you just want to enjoy a movie and can overlook it’s adaptation flaws you’ll probably enjoy it very much.

Leave it to Disney to “throw some sex and money at it” and hope for the best.

Persephone is portrade as a prostitute, cleavage and sex referenced everywhere.

How sad.

I had heard they were good books, but have no desire to read them now.

“Harry Potter meets Clash of the Titans….” 2010-10-10
By Brian Nallick (Mpls, MN)
…..but fails to live up to either franchise.

Let me explain.

The similarities between the two are endless so I won’t go into it that much.

From Percy’s home life (Potter).

To the vast array of God’s and monsters (Clash)

The film just feels like Hollywood watched both movies and threw this one together in record time.

Let’s try for a moment and pretend neither Potter nor Clash exist.

What do you get?

Sorry but you still get an average movie with an average main star who really can’t act all that well.

Ok, the good?

Decent FX.

The story, while generic and a total rip off is still passable. Barely.

Nice to see the Nashville Parthenon.

Still have to go to Tennessee and see that.

Always good to see Pierce Brosnan in any movie.

Uma Thermon is an awesome Medussa.

The bad?

I think I already covered my main complaints.

I didn’t really care for the casting of the God’s.

After seeing Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes as Zeus and Hades I really can’t see anyone else doing justice to either God.

The main actor who played Percy is way too old and not that good of an actor.

There was no real chemistry between the different actors.

The whole thing felt like a very poor made for tv movie.

Do I recommend a rental?

If you’re tired of the Potter series or Clash of the Titans?

Sure, rent it.

Otherwise, stick with the source material.
